Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” - Matthew 5:27-30
In this episode, I interviewed a wise friend named Charlie Powers about the problem of lust. Almost everyone is tempted by lust, so it’s easy to think that that particular sin is not a big deal to God. Maybe the command not to lust is more of a warning or a suggestion. Well, it is a warning, but it’s not a suggestion. And it’s the only commandment about which Jesus said it would be better if you were to lose body parts than participate in that sin.
A person is the culmination of their habits. And we get better at what we do regularly, whether that’s playing piano, shooting hoops, or finding the kind of porn you like. The problem a lot of people have with their lust habit is that they may say they hate it, but part of them secretly loves it.
